FURETANK INVESTS IN TWO NEW VESSELS

A Sustainable environmental investment

Partners of the Gothia Tanker Alliance order next generation Intermediate Product/Chemical Tankers with LNG propulsion.

Furetank Rederi AB, Rederi AB Älvtank and Thun Tankers BV have recently contracted four newbuildings to be built at Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding Ltd. The vessels – of which Furetank will own two and Älvtank and Thun Tankers, one each, will be delivered during 2018/2019.

The vessels will be built to a design, developed by FKAB together with Furetank with special focus on minimal impact on the environment, with close to 50 % reduction of CO2 emissions. The vessels fulfills the Tier III rules, have dual fuel/LNG propulsion including LNG in port consumption, LNG for Inert gas production, power production with floating frequency, battery backup (UPS) for all vital functions to minimize use of auxiliary engines, installed ballast water cleaning system, ice class 1A and Alternative Propulsion System.

The vessels will be commercially managed by Furetank Chartering in the Gothia Tanker Alliance.

FURETANK TAKES DECISION ON LNG CONVERSION OF FURE WEST

The conversion of the vessel FURE WEST, owned by Furetank Rederi AB and designed by FKAB Sweden, will be ready by the end of 2015 says Lars Höglund CEO at Furetank. Together with the engine maker MAK in Germany, supplier Pon Power in Denmark, Taylor-Wharton which will manufacture the tanks and LNG fuel system in Slovakia and the fact that the work will be carried out in a yard in the north of Europe, makes the project LNG CONV stay true to the wish from the Commission, to use European workmanship.

The Joint Industry Project LNG CONV first met in 2012 to discuss how and when a conversion to LNG would be possible. Not only the technical but also the theoretical and practical processes had to be planned, this is where, among others, the classification society Bureau Veritas adds great value to the project and is the ones who will certify the vessel.

The project decided to use the ZVT method (Zero Vision Tool) and have since reported its red yellow and green concerns to the ZVT Reference group and has by doing so also contributed immensely to the progress of regulation and financial discussions in general (more about ZVTREF).

LNG CONV is one of six projects that is part of the Pilot LNG, co-financed by the EU, where they together are establishing the LNG infrastructure. This structure includes all components required to ship LNG from the gas supplier to the LNG terminal, from the terminal to the bunker vessel, and from the bunker vessel to the LNG fuelled vessels (more about Pilot LNG).

In regards to the conversion of FURE WEST, Mr Höglund points out “we have been doing a lot of research for the best solution and we are confident that this is the right way forward for our project. For instance, the tanks have pumps which both ensure the pressure to the engine and sees to that the storage time is increased until the maximum pressure in the tanks is reached. It’s important to us as a company that we continue on the road towards no emissions, since 2011 FURE WEST has been certified as “Green Vessel” according to the CSI and adding to that we now will reduce CO2, eliminate SOx and PM and minimize NOx when converting to LNG”.

After conversion, the FURE WEST will continue trading in the Northern European ECA, employed by Furetank Chartering (a member of the Gothia Tankers alliance).

Our history

Four generations...

history1history1history1
Shipping culture has affected life for centuries on the small island of Donsö in Gothenburg’s southern archipelago, the home of Furetank.

The active owners in the group today are in many ways typical of the strong tradition of seamanship which has existed on the island for many generations. Since the 1700s, the family’s forefathers have been captains, owners and partowners of a large number of ships which have sailed for shipping companies with Donsö as their homeport. One of them was the schooner ”Ragnar af Donso”, built in 1874.

Like other ship owners at Donsö, Furetank grew out of the 1950s expansion in the oil trade. Karl Höglund and his two sons, Hans and Per-Gunnar, and others ordered their first tanker in 1954. A larger vessel was ordered a few years later. The fleet was continously refitted and enlarged. Soon the third generation of Höglunds was on its way into the company.

The construction of the vessel Furevik in 1989-90 was a landmark for Furetank. The experience of the whole Höglund family was called upon in a project which marked out Furetank as a modern family operator with a fleet of consistent high quality. The company’s recent history can be described as a conscious expansion, with vessel quality as the guiding star.

99sigrid

A management contract was signed during 2011 with Svensk Kärnbränslehantering, SKB (Swedish Nuclear Waste Handling) and after this Furetank assumed the ship Sigyn at the end of that year. During 2012 a lot of effort was made in shipyards in Rumania to complete Sigrid (an upgraded replacement vessel for Sigyn). Furetank was contracted as site manager to oversee and quality assure the production. Furetank is today technical, crew manager and DOC holder for M/S Sigrid.
